In collaboration with Dr. Gretchen Meyer, second year PhD student Hailey Jones in the Kopinke Lab just published her first paper in the lab, one that seeks to bridge the gap for a critical unknown: whether intramuscular adipose tissue (IMAT) is a passive biomarker of disease progression or an active pathogenic agent.
This review synthesizes a complete story of intramuscular fat from the right vernacular to integrating findings from human studies with insights from diverse animal models, all the way to evaluating the mechanisms by which IMAT impairs muscle function- as a physical disruptor and/or a local source of paracrine disruption.
